HANDBOOK FOR NEW PARENTS

Dear Parents,

My name is Helen Powell and I am the Headteacher of Stephenson School.
We opened in September 2009 in the premises on Kensal Road vacated by Maple Walk School when they moved to their new building in Harlesden. Like Maple Walk, we shall grow by one class each year and will move into permanent premises when we have outgrown our current accommodation.

Helen Powell with children As with all NMS schools, emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy, as we believe these are key skills on which all other learning depends. In addition, our rich and varied curriculum aims to give the children sound knowledge as well as the opportunity for practical investigations, physical exercise and imaginative or creative development. Specialist teachers lead dance, drama, French and PE lessons and the staff team has a wealth of experience and training.

I believe passionately that children learn when they are happy. If they enjoy coming to school, have friends around them and build up a positive relationship with one another and the staff, they will be motivated and eager to learn. Each week we have assemblies, ‘Circle Time' and ‘Show and Tell' sessions so that the children learn to listen to one another as well as building up their own confidence in speaking aloud. Our small classes help us build up the relationships within our school and make it a warm, secure and cheerful environment.

I can promise you that Stephenson will offer a good, solid and sound education to your child. I can assure you that your child will be taught by people who care; by teachers who prepare and teach to the best of their ability and nurture each individual child to their full potential. I am confident that your child will leave us fully grounded in the key skills of literacy and numeracy, with a passion for learning and an understanding of what it means to belong to a close, happy community.

About Stephenson

Stephenson School is named after the inspirational British engineer Robert Stephenson, designer of the Rocket and son and partner of George Stephenson, designer of the Locomotion.

The school opened in September 2009 with Reception and Year 1 classes. Mrs Helen Powell, formerly Deputy Head of Maple Walk School, is the first Head of Stephenson. It will be an NMS school and so the ethos, class sizes and curriculum will be similar to those of Maple Walk. However, Stephenson School is a wholly separate school with its own head, Friends and governing body.

Initially, we will have room for four classes. However, the intention will be for this to become a 4 - 11 school like Maple Walk and every effort will be made to find larger premises within the next two years.
